Odisha Faces Several Days of Heavy Rain

Odisha is likely to remain under an extended spell of unsettled monsoon weather. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning issued on August 11, the state is expected to receive heavy rain on August 11, followed by very heavy rainfall from August 12 to 15. Heavy rainfall is again forecast for August 16 and 17, with thunderstorms and lightning also possible during parts of the period.

Why the rainfall is expected to continue

The IMD has indicated that a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas around August 12. Such weather systems can strengthen monsoon activity over Odisha and neighbouring parts of eastern India, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall. 

Heavy rain may affect daily life

Persistent heavy rainfall can result in waterlogging in urban areas, flooding of low-lying locations, disruption to road traffic and reduced visibility. Rural areas may also face problems if rivers, streams and drainage channels receive large amounts of runoff.

Areas that have already experienced saturated soil or elevated water levels could be particularly vulnerable if additional heavy rain occurs over several consecutive days.

Thunderstorms and lightning

Along with rainfall, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms and lightning in Odisha during parts of the forecast period. Residents should take precautions during thunderstorms and avoid exposed locations, open fields, isolated trees and water bodies when lightning activity is occurring. 

Possible impact on agriculture

The prolonged rainfall could have mixed effects on agriculture. Regular monsoon rain can benefit crops and replenish soil moisture and water resources. However, excessive rainfall and waterlogging can damage standing crops, particularly in low-lying agricultural areas, and can interfere with harvesting, transportation and other farm activities.

What residents should do

People living in areas vulnerable to flooding or waterlogging should monitor official weather and local administration advisories. During periods of intense rain, residents should avoid unnecessary travel through flooded roads and should exercise particular caution around rivers, drains and other rapidly flowing water.

The continuing rain also means that authorities may need to keep a close watch on river levels, drainage systems, vulnerable roads and low-lying settlements over the coming days.

Overall, the IMD's latest forecast indicates that Odisha could experience several consecutive days of significant rainfall, making weather monitoring and local preparedness especially important through August 17.
