India emerges as world’s third-largest domestic aviation market: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India’s domestic aviation market is now the third largest globally, driven by rapid airport expansion, increased passenger traffic, and regional connectivity initiatives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Wings India 2026 aviation event and highlighted a major milestone: **India’s aviation sector has grown into the world’s **third-largest domestic market. This rapid ascent reflects sharp increases in passenger traffic, affordability of air travel, and an expanding network of airports.
According to the government, the number of operational airports has more than doubled over the past decade — from around 70 in 2014 to over 160 today — with over 100 additional aerodromes activated in recent years. Connectivity schemes such as UDAN have played a major role in linking previously underserved cities and boosting regional travel.
PM Modi also outlined future aviation plans, including further airport expansion, growth of air cargo infrastructure, and development of aircraft manufacturing capabilities. These initiatives aim to sustain momentum, enhance logistics, and position India as a global aviation hub in the coming decade.
